Policies at Glassford Day Nursery

Behaviour

We promote positive behaviour. Negative behaviour is most commonly dealt with using distraction or, if this does not work, in a 'time out' manner. We ask the child to sit down for a few minutes, in the same room, but not participating in the activities of the group, until asked to join in. If a child hurts another child and is asked to sit out, he/she is asked to say sorry and make friends with the child in question. At GDN we promote positive behaviour and very rarely expect to use any form of sanction

Story time is another method commonly used as a calming measure.

Manners

Good manners are encouraged at all times, please and thank you, please may I go to the toilet? Please may I leave the table? etc, are all praised and very quickly become part of everyday language.

Healthy Eating

We are committed to promoting healthy eating and positive attitudes towards good food. A well-balanced, varied menu that includes a rich diversity of foods will ensure that the children are provided with the right balance of vitamins and minerals to keep them in good health. Staff will encourage children to sit at the table during meal times to promote good table manners.

A weekly menu of meals and snacks will be displayed on the parent's notice board so you are aware of your child's intake of food. Any child with special dietary needs will be catered for.

Personal Hygiene

All children from an early age will be provided with their own toothbrush and encouraged to clean their teeth after meals and snack times.
Good toileting habits are taught from an early age. Washing hands after toileting and before and after eating are all part of our everyday routine.

Toy Tidying

Children are encouraged to tidy away toys when they have finished playing with them. Toys are most often tidied away before lunch, story times and home time.This again is part of the routine and encourages respect for their environment.

Equal Opportunities

We promote an equal opportunities policy through education and play, encouraging children respect others irrespective of differences.

Race equality

We have a great range of multi-cultural toys, books and equipment and promote racial equality at all times.

Gender stereotyping

We don't!

Boys are quite free to play with dolls, prams, cookers etc. Equally girls are free to play with tractors, cars, tools etc.

Confidentiality

Any information being shared between you and staff will be kept confidential. We hope you will understand that certain information may need to be handed over to other agencies. All information sharing will be handled sensitively and confidentially and is shared on a need to know basis. All staff will ensure children's records/reports are filed safely and securely.

Child Protection issues

Please let us know if your child has hurt/bruised themselves.
Don't be afraid, we fully understand that accidents happen, but all nursery staff, if they have any suspicions, have to report it.

Data Protection

Any information held on our computers e.g. child assessments, will comply with the Data Protection Act 1998. Any information held in writing will be kept in locked files and anonomised in order to maintain confidentiality.

Complaints Procedure

If you have concerns about your child or the way the nursery is being run on a day to day basis, please speak to the nursery manager who will deal with the issue and will respond within three working days. You may be asked to put your complaint in writing and asked to attend a meeting where the issue will hopefully be resolved.
